Pitted Nails

Pitting of the nails, resembling a number of small dents, could be due to a skin condition known as psoriasis. This also often occurs on the elbows and knees where it produces a red eczema-like rash with a characteristic silvery scale over the skin surface. It is possible to get psoriatic nail changes without the skin being affected, so this is one possibility.
Distorted nails can also be due to fungal infection, hardening of the arteries and vitamin deficiency. White flecks merely represent harmless air pockets in the nails, whereas white lines and horizontal ridges have been associated with arsenic poisoning. Not suggesting that this is true in your case!
Brittle nails can occur with abnormalities of the thyroid gland, and a white hue at the base of the nail can be a sign of liver disease. It would be advisable for you to take a daily multivitamin supplement to rule out any vitamin deficiency. Also try to keep your nails out of washing up water or any moisture in case fungal infection is a possibility.
